About Naturopathic Medicine
"The doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease."
~Thomas Edison
Naturopathic doctors (ND's) are the original functional medicine practitioners, and are still the nation's leading experts in natural medicine and holistic health care. We serve as family practice doctors, graduating from Department of Education accredited, four-year medical schools and passing two sets of rigorous board exams through NABNE (the North American Board of Naturopathic Examiners).
ND’s hold the radical belief that nature heals when we remove obstacles and get out of the way. We act as detectives, listening closely to our patients to identify obstacles to cure. While patient history provides the best information, ND’s incorporate physical exam as well as conventional and functional laboratory testing. Once we have a comprehensive picture of each individual patient, we work with the body's innate healing power to restore balance, using the least invasive therapies to strengthen vitality. Naturopathic doctors focus on optimal health rather than fighting disease, and we strive to educate and empower patients to take charge of their own healing.
Many patients choose ND’s as their primary care doctor when they want to avoid pharmaceutical drugs, take more ownership of their health in a holistic way or when they have not had success in the conventional medical system.
The principles of naturopathic medicine
- First of all, to do no harm.
Unfortunately, “iatrogenic” reasons (i.e. caused by medical care rather than by the patient’s underlying disease) are a leading cause of death in the United States. Naturopathic doctors use the gentlest, least invasive, safe therapies to support normal physiologic function, leading to inherently low risk for harm. - To act in cooperation with the Healing Power of Nature.
Naturopathic doctors believe that nature provides the best medicine and that human beings are adapted to be healthy when living in harmony with the natural world. - To address the fundamental causes of disease.
While mitigation of discomfort is important, treating only the symptoms is like a game of whack-a-mole. True healing happens only when we connect the dots and treat the underlying causes of “dis-ease”. - To heal the whole person through individualized treatment.
There is no cookie cutter or flow chart in naturopathic medicine. Instead, we use a patient centered, individually based, customized, holistic approach to formulate treatment plans. - To teach the principles of healthy living and preventive medicine.
Inherent to naturopathic medicine is patient education. We take the time to educate our patients, so they understand their bodies and their unique challenges and strengths, therefore empowering them to take charge of their own health and healing.
